I’m not very good with process since it usually means something will take a long time. I have very little patience. Since I am result oriented, I’m always eager to see the finished product. But I’m working on a new painting, a large abstract figurative of a political protest, and it’s taught me the value of process. My painting is very slow and methodical because there is so much going on in the image. As a result of being forced to take my time and consider all the “moving parts”, I suddenly am able to appreciate the fun of process – not to mention the artistic gratification. When I started the painting I had couple dozen figures. Over the course of bringing them to life, they’ve each turned into specific individuals and now I feel like I have a “relationship” with each one of them! I’m trying to give each of them an identity and personality. They’ve become friends! It’s weird, but rewarding.
I’m posting a picture of where I began and where the painting is now. It’s still not finished. I hope to have to ready for a show I’m in next week, but don’t want to rush it.
